Epoch Biodesign, a London, UK-based company using enzymes to make recycled plastics cheaper and higher performing than virgin materials, raised $18.3M in Series A funding, alongside $1M grant from the UK government.

The round was led by Extantia Capital, with participation from Inditex, Lowercarbon Capital, Happiness Capital, Kibo Invest, Day One Ventures and others.

The company, which has raised $34m to date, intends to use the funds to expand operations and its development efforts.

Led by CEO and Founder Jacob Nathan, Epoch Biodesign combines AI, robotic automation, and advanced synthetic biology to engineer enzymes that transform waste plastics into chemicals.

In addition to the funding, Inditex and Epoch are working together through a multi-year joint development agreement.

The company, which aims to process tens of thousands of tonnes of waste by 2028, has already over 40 partnerships in place across performance apparel, automotive, luxury fashion, and technical textiles. Epoch has a team of 30 scientists and engineers in London.
